Research at the Department of Composition is conducted in close connection with the artistic research activities of the teaching staff as well as with doctoral dissertation projects.
Since 2010, the professors’ research topics have primarily focused on music technology, sound, and space, contributing to the development of contemporary interdisciplinary discourse in the field. The research explores the relationship between contemporary composition and the study of musical acoustics, perception, sociocultural phenomena, new musical instruments and instrumentation, as well as the interaction between traditional virtuosity and contemporary technological applications in music.
The doctoral programme at the Department of Composition represents the highest level of study of composition and its theory within the broad context of contemporary artistic research. Doctoral students pursue individually oriented research projects that typically take place at the intersection of compositional practice and theoretical reflection. The creative component of doctoral studies serves as a methodological foundation for generating more broadly applicable knowledge within the interdisciplinary context of contemporary composition.
During their studies, doctoral students engage with the highest levels of the contemporary music scene and participate in an international professional discourse within their field. They form an active and inspiring part of their academic and artistic community and represent potential contributors to the ongoing generational development of contemporary music and scholarship.
