DANCE PEDAGOGY (present form)

Specialization: Methods of Classical Ballet Technique
Specialization: Methods of Modern and Contemporary Dance
Specialization: Methods of Folk Dance

Knowledge of dance techniques at an advanced level of dance conservatory graduates; pedagogical talent and interest in the field; knowledge of music theory, overview of the history of art, dance and ballet; general cultural overview; teaching or artistic professional experience welcome.

Admission requirements
Applicants must submit the following materials to the Department of Dance (sekretariat.k107@hamu.cz) with their application:
1. a professional curriculum vitae with emphasis on the level of dance education attained
2. a cover letter with emphasis on the intended major
3. a video recording of their own pedagogical output.

Documents sent after the deadline will not be included in the admission procedure. Failure to submit documents by the deadline will be considered as failure to meet the conditions and the admission procedure will be terminated.

The next admission procedure consists of two elimination rounds:

ROUND 1. Present
1) For the first round, the candidate will prepare 2 combinations of their choosen specialisation (classical dance or modern and contemporary dance or folk dance techniques) for pedagogical demonstration.
2) Simultaneously they shall submit to the commission a written preparation of their two pedagogical demonstrations.
3) a written test of general culture, of the history of dance and ballet, and of the history and theory of music.
4) a practical examination in dance techniques (classical, modern and contemporary, folk).

ROUND 2. Present
1) presentation of two pedagogical demonstrations of their own, the preparation of which was submitted in Round 1.
2) interview on the basic knowledge of the system of dance technique (classical, modern and contemporary or folk dance); a methodical approach to the analysis of the individual elements is required.
3) interview on dance pedagogy - preparation and execution of the lesson, attitude of the teacher towards the pupils, interest in the field, overview of what is happening in the field of art, etc.

The committee evaluates the candidates with a cumulative grade from 1 to 25 points, which includes knowledge of dance techniques (classical, modern and contemporary, folk) at the advanced level of Dance Conservatory graduates, pedagogical talent, knowledge of music theory, an overview of the history of art, dance and ballet, a general cultural overview, pedagogical or artistic professional practice are welcome. 

Upon completion of the entrance examination, the Admissions Committee will rank the applicants according to the average of their scores and recommend for admission those applicants who have met the minimum score of 20 points.
 

CHOREOLOGY

The admission procedure consists of two rounds.

Round 1 – written test and analysis

in person

1) written test on general cultural awareness, history and theory of dance and ballet, history and theory of music

2) written analysis of a choreographic sample (focusing on dance style/technique, components and form, artistic context, or identification of a specific work)

To advance to the next round, candidates must obtain at least 20 points out of a possible 25. This grade includes an assessment of logical and systematic thinking, expressive and stylistic skills, an overview of dance events in the domestic and international context, a basic overview of the history of dance and ballet, knowledge of the basics of music theory, the history of music and theater, and general cultural knowledge.

If the applicant does not obtain the minimum number of points, they will not meet the test requirements and the admission procedure will be terminated. In the event of advancement to the second round, points from the first round will not be counted.

Second round – oral exam

in person

It consists of a professional interview in which the applicant demonstrates their knowledge and skills in the following areas:

1) dance history (in connection with the assessment of language skills in the chosen foreign language)

2) orientation in contemporary dance

3) motivation to study and ideas for professional specialization

The admissions committee evaluates the applicant with a summary grade ranging from 1 to 25. This grade includes an assessment of logical and systematic thinking, expression, stylistic and language skills, an overview of dance events in the domestic and international context, a basic overview of the history of dance and ballet, knowledge of the basics of music theory, the history of music and theater, and general cultural knowledge.

After the second round, the admissions committee will rank the applicants according to their average scores in the second round and recommend for admission those applicants who are ranked in accordance with the target number for the dance science program, provided that their score in the second round is at least 20 points.

If there are not enough applicants who meet the point requirement, the target number will not be filled.
 

Opening for the 2026/2027 academic year - Dance Pedagogy in combined form of study

Admission procedure and evaluation for the bachelor's degree program in Dance Pedagogy, combined study, for specializations: Classical Dance, Folk Dance, Dance Education, Modern and Contemporary Dance

Prerequisites for admission are knowledge of dance techniques (classical, modern and contemporary, folk) at the advanced level of dance conservatory graduates, pedagogical talent and interest in the field documented by pedagogical practice, knowledge of music theory, overview of the history of dance and ballet, general cultural overview, stage experience.

The admission procedure consists of two elimination rounds.

Round 1 – correspondence

In addition to the other required attachments, applicants must also enclose the following with their application

- a letter of motivation emphasizing the intended focus (classical dance / modern and contemporary dance / folk dance / dance education),

- proof of several years of professional performance and/or teaching experience in the field,

- a video with a sample of their own teaching performance:

Instructions for sending a video recording

Applicants for Dance Pedagogy studies should prepare a video sample (15-20 minutes long) in which they present themselves as teachers.

In the sample, they should demonstrate and explain to their students (dancers) a prepared topic, intention, and combinations within the selected technique that will be the main focus of their studies.

The focus of their presentation should be primarily on explaining the principles of movement, precise timing to the music, methodological thinking, pointing out possible mistakes, and vocal presentation. It should also focus on communication with students during lessons and correcting mistakes made by individuals and the whole group.

Classical dance technique

- a combination of á la barre, au milieu, allegro (or sur le pointes) with a methodological goal in one selected difficulty level (beginners, intermediate, advanced)

Contemporary dance technique

- selected movement principle developed within the framework of floor work, coordination exercises, center work, dance combinations, and jump variations in work in space

Folk dance technique

- selected dance from any region of Bohemia or Moravia with methodical teaching of the given dance steps and their combinations, ending with a complete performance of the selected dance.

Dance education

- working with children of elementary art school age, i.e., 5-18 years old, clearly defined lesson objectives, individual exercises that methodically follow on from each other and develop the set lesson objectives with commentary, linking dance and music, appropriateness of motivation for the child's age.

Sending a video link

The application for study also includes proof of uploading a video recording to one of the public servers (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.).

After checking it, it is better to send the following to sekretariat.k107@hamu.cz before creating an electronic application:

  1. Working links to your video uploaded in a doc document. If you use a password-protected upload, please also include the password. (The video can also be set as private to share only with those who have your link.)
  2. A screenshot or PDF with the date your videos were uploaded to YouTube, for example.
  3. Wait for an email confirming that the documents have been delivered and are in order. If you do not receive a confirmation email within five days, please call: +420 234 244 140

Uploading videos in YouTube Studio

Videos can be uploaded to YouTube in a few simple steps. Log in to YouTube Studio. https://studio.youtube.com/

Select Upload in the top right corner.

Select Upload video (beta). Select the file you want to upload.

Step 1: Add basic information

Add important and required information to your video. If this information is missing, your uploaded video will be saved as a draft on the Videos page.

Title: The title of your video.

Description: Information that will appear below your video.

Thumbnail: An image that viewers will see before clicking on your video.

Audience: Here you specify the intended audience for the video. You can write: entrance exams for dance pedagogy.

Step 2: Select advanced settings

Choose between a standard copyright license and a Creative Commons license.

Step 3: Preview and publish

Select the Preview and Publish tab. Select the privacy settings for the video. A good option is "Private" – this ensures that the video will be completely processed before viewers see it.

After uploading, send a working link to the email address sekretariat.k107@hamu.cz

The admissions committee will review and evaluate these materials and decide by vote (pass/fail) whether applicants will proceed to the next round of the admissions process. If the decision is "fail," the admissions process is terminated.

Round 2 - Talent exam

in person

The entrance exam consists of:

1. a test of general and specialized knowledge of dance and music (maximum achievable score: 5 points)

2. a pedagogical-psychological test (maximum achievable score: 5 points)

3. a pedagogical presentation according to the planned focus (specialization in classical dance, modern and contemporary dance, folk dance, dance education) (maximum achievable score 10)

4. an interview on professional pedagogical issues. (maximum achievable number of points: 5)

The admissions committee evaluates applicants with a summary score ranging from 1 to 25 points. This score includes an assessment of knowledge of dance techniques, pedagogical talent and interest in the field documented by pedagogical practice, knowledge of music theory, overview of the history of dance and ballet, general cultural overview and context of the field.

After the second round, the admissions committee will rank the applicants according to their average scores in the second round and recommend for admission those applicants who are ranked within the target number for the field, provided that their score in the second round is at least 20 points.

Foreign students applying for the tuition free study in Czech language need to provide a certificate of Czech language proficiency of B1 level or higher (in accordance with CEFR) from an acredited institution along with their application.
