- THE CZECH MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, YOUTH AND SPORT (MŠMT) PROGRAMME FOR "LONG-TERM CONCEPTUAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE INSTITUTION"

IP DKR AMU project "Subjective and Objective Aspects of Musical Sound Quality"

  • Duration of the Project: From 2019, currently in progress (planned completion in 2022)
  • Total Level of Subsidy: 6 419 000 CZK

Abstract : The project builds on the IP DKR project "Sound Quality" and continues to address the causal relationships between physical (objective) and perceived (subjective) properties of sound and their relationship to quality. Sound quality is examined in speech and singing vocal expressions as well as in the sounds of musical instruments. The project is mainly focused on basic research, as other grants addressed at MARC have the character of applied research, as requested in submissions by external providers. The focus builds on basic research from the previous projects: 1M Research Centre for Music Acoustics (2005-11), DKR Sound Quality (2014–18), and DKR Organs and Their Sound (2016–17). Objective and subjective properties of vocal expressions and sounds of musical instruments which students generally perceive as pleasant are studied. The aim is also the determination and psychoacoustic measurement of those properties of sound which determine that  listeners label them as being of quality (for sounds produced for a specific purpose). For musical instruments, it is the colour of the tone. Voice research deals with the vibroacoustic properties of vocal cords and adjacent resonant parts, and their connection with subjective descriptions of sound properties as perceived by the listener. (It is also aimed at the artistic use of the voice and the emotional effects of the sound of music on listeners).

- A CESNET DEVELOPMENT FUND PROJECT (FRC)

Project 632R1/2018: "Addition of the PsychotestEditor application with perceptual evaluation of image and video recordings"

  • Duration of the Project: 2019–2020
  • FRC costs: 408 000 CZK, total 685 000 CZK

Abstract : The project followed on from the projects FRC 552R1/ 2014 and 465/2012, where the web application PsychotestEditor for psycho-physical tests was created (programmed in a domain-specific language, which allows the preparation of perception tests with acoustic, image and video stimuli). Based on previous experience of its use in the teaching of speech therapists or in the field of phoniatrics and ENT (training in evaluation of voice disorders, evaluation of gross motor problems and laryngeal mobility with control of answers, etc.) the aim was to enrich the functionality of the application created for scientific and educational activities, for use also in new technological areas, including machine learning. Thus, there was an extension to include other, specific types of assessment and the possibility of presenting these results in the teaching context (this concerns the interactive determination of the position or contours of objects of interest, or trajectories of movement of monitored objects and events in the image, for video-sequential stimuli). Specific forms for entering stimuli data were also added, connected to the relation to end-user databases. The project also measured specific educational data (audio and video recordings) to create a MARC database simulating publicly inaccessible databases of clinical workplaces.

- THE TECHNOLOGY AGENCY OF THE CZECH REPUBLIC (TACR) PROJECT, "ETA"(EXPERIMENTAL DEVELOPMENT AND INNOVATION) PROGRAMME

Project TL01000106 "Distance Cooperation in Art Education Using Modern Transmission Technologies"

  • Duration of the Project: From 2018, currently in progress (planned completion in 2021)
  • Planned Level of Subsidy: 2 107 000 CZK, total: 2 341 000 CZK

Abstract : The project is undertaken by CESNET z.s.p.o. and MARC, HAMU. The goals of the project include the construction of a model workplace for distance learning and cooperation in culture (in the performing arts on the premises of HAMU). The project will create and make available modern technical means enabling a new way of undertaking tasks, in the education of students and in the mentoring of art teachers. CESNET is developing a prototype device for low-latency audio and video transmissions enabling distance learning and collaboration in the performing arts. MARC experimentally verifies the use of these new technical means in art education (in new types of distance cooperation, interactive distance courses and distance evaluation of artistic performances). As a result of knowledge from experimentally verified types of education, the methodology for their use is elaborated. As part of the project, a world conference/workshop, "Network Performing Arts Production Workshop", was organised at HAMU (NPAPW 2019, which now takes place every year alternately on the American continent and in Europe and deals with technologies and methods enabling the use of remote internet connection in the arts). Three procedures were presented at HAMU, which try to minimize the delay of the transmitted image and sound so that the participants in the telebridge can cooperate as if they were meeting in person. Of these, on presentation, the new low-latency MVP technology developed by CESNET (in cooperation with MARC), involving mutual, audiovisual communication of the highest 4K quality, with a delay of only a few milliseconds, allowing musicians to play synchronously even when in various buildings and locations, proved to be the best. Due to the high sensitivity of the artistic performance to external conditions, the results of the practical verification of this MVP technology implemented at MARC were presented by MARC staff in lectures and a workshop at a conference. They successfully tested its use in distance teaching between partner institutions HAMU and DAMU and at public concerts (e.g when used in the rhythmically-demanding music of Bohuslav Martinů or during the Czech, joint concert project, "Resisted Evil" on the occasion of the Václav Havel Prize for Human Rights in cooperation with the Václav Havel Library). Part of the NPAPW 2019 conference was also an artistic, public music and dance performance, "I Wish to Dance Well Under the Stars" realised with the help of MVP for audiences in Prague and Barcelona, where a musical composition was presented synchronously played on three organs (from the Martinů hall at HAMU and two Prague churches) accompanied by a real time dance performance by two dancers located in Prague and Barcelona respectively. (Due to the Covid-19 situation, this technology for the future constitutes a visionary act in the development of new teaching methods). All these experimental performances were a success, and therefore the researchers of the project (jointly CESNET and HAMU), together with other international broadcasts tested were entered for the competition for the European Prize for Cultural Heritage EUROPA NOSTRA (Cross-Border Cooperation for a European Classical Music Project). The entry submitted subsequently won the highest European award, EUROPA NOSTRA 2020 (the distance cooperation referred to thus ranked among the 21 most outstanding achievements of all the applications from 15 EU countries).

- THE CZECH MINISTRY OF CULTURE PROGRAMME, "NATIONAL CULTURAL IDENTITY" (NAKI II)

Project DG18P02OVV014: "The Historical Organ, the Means for its Sound Preservation and Restoration and Comprehensive Musical, Acoustic and Monuments Research, as Part of the National Identity and Cultural Heritage in the Czech Republic"

  • Duration of the Project: From 2018, currently in progress (planned completion in 2022)
  • Planned Level of Subsidy: 26 132 000 CZK, total with NPÚ 29 726 000 CZK

Abstract : The project is undertaken by MARC, HAMU with NPÚ. The global goal of the project is the preservation, systematic rescue and reconversion of the artistic and sound wealth of the national collection of historical organs. To achieve this aim, there are specific goals that address the most important research accounts related to the above issues in accordance with the objectives of the NAKI programme:

1. research and development of: a) working procedures and materials for protection, restoration and improvement of the care system preserving the sound form of the historic organ, b) means for monitoring and recording factors influencing the condition of the organ, c) non-destructive methods of technology diagnostics for those organ parts, d) means for the documentation, registration and protection of the most endangered organs dating from periods in history, which were not addressed by the project DF12P01OVV012 of the NAKI I programme;

2. optimization of the process of restoration of the historical organ and its care in terms of sound authenticity; the rescue of authentic sound attacked by a natural threat - the wood-destroying insect (and other procedures not addressed by the project DF12P01OVV012);

3. creation of a software database application OrgDb for organ data of the Romantic Periods;

4. creation of a software database for documenting the musical tradition, national identity and cultural consciousness of society associated with the historical organ;

- THE CZECH MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, YOUTH AND SPORT (MŠMT) PROGRAMME FOR "LONG-TERM CONCEPTUAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE INSTITUTION"

Project, IP DKR AMU "The Organ and Its Sound"

  • Duration of the Project: 2016–2017
  • Total Level of Subsidy: 1 401 000 CZK

Abstract : The project addressed the issue of physical principles of the sound of organ pipes and the influence on perceived properties of sound by changes in the setting of the mouth (intonation adjustments of the lips). As HAMU does not provide permanent institutional resources for the operation of MARC, the competitive internal project, DK DKR, together with the project, "Sound Quality", was the second main source of funding for research work, so this enabled 1 employee who had been released from employment at the end of 2015 due to lack of funds for the said employee's wages, to be rehired. The project's aim was to gain new knowledge about the acoustics of the organ for those interested in the musical–artistic, organological and musical–listening public and to process it in the professional monograph, "The Sound of the Organ Whistle". The results obtained were also published in journals impacted, and the functional sample of a transparent organ pipe developed is also used in the follow-up project NAKI II (for all results see MARC Publication Results).

- A CESNET DEVELOPMENT FUND PROJECT (FRC)

Project 552R1/2014: "Supplementing the Environment for the Preparation of Perception Tests with Presentations and Teaching Functions"

  • Duration of the Project: 2014–2015
  • FRC costs: 351 000 CZK, total 729 000 CZK

Abstract : The project created a new web application, PsychotestEditor, designed for psychoacoustic and psychophysical voice tests, which would be generally applicable for participants in the CESNET network in various workplaces with different specialisations. This was a follow-up to the results achieved in the FRC 465/2012 project, in which MARC prepared a basic, locally available application (it was available to the public in the form of remote access to the voicelab.cesnet.cz server, which was cancelled before the project began). At the same time, an educational project was prepared by 13 public universities called, “Connecting Voice Care and Teaching Future Voice Professionals”, which was submitted for the CZECH MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, YOUTH AND SPORT (MŠMT) programme and which gathered together the research requirements of a number of institutions: members of CESNET Prague, Charles University in Prague, Masaryk University in Brno, the University of Ostrava in Ostrava, Palacký University in Olomouc, the University of Pardubice, the University of Hradec Králové, the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, the Technical University in Liberec, the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice, the Institute of Chemical Technology in Prague and the Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem). The programme was cancelled by the provider of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (the whole project, administratively very demanding, was therefore neither evaluated nor accepted), but MARC began to explore some of the ideas collected within this project. For this reason, the supplementing of database recordings was introduced  using new technical equipment; video recordings of laryngostroboscopic findings and body movements during breathing accompanying vocal expressions were realised, and added to existing recordings of pathological and non-pathological voice from previous FRC projects. This data is an important parameter of specific voice expressions and is ready for use in follow-up projects.

- THE CZECH MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, YOUTH AND SPORT (MŠMT) PROGRAMME FOR "LONG-TERM CONCEPTUAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE INSTITUTION "

Project IP DKR AMU "Sound Quality"

  • Duration of the Project: 2014–2018
  • Total Level of Subsidy: 12 600 000 CZK

Abstract : The project addressed the issue of qualitative connections of physical properties of sound sources with auditory perceptions of selected sound sources (the human voice, the sound of violins and wind instruments). As the operation of MARC, HAMU has no permanent institutional funding, its staff must compete for 100% funding of work in research projects. For 2016 and 2017, none of the many MARC projects prepared and submitted to competitions announced by external providers was accepted. In these years, therefore, the operation of the MARC Research Centre and the salaries of all its employees had to be fully paid from the internal project, IP DKR, entered to compete in 2013, within the Internal Competition, in the Long-Term Conceptual Development programme, (the financial support distributed in this competition is received by AMU from the provider, the MŠMT on the basis of RIV results, to which MARC makes a significant contribution). For these years, therefore, the research plans of the “Sound Quality” project had to be revised and its budget items adjusted, but even so, the number of MARC experts had to be reduced by 3, which significantly weakened the human resources of the HAMU research infrastructure (AMU). Despite this complication, even with a lack of resources to carry out scientific research experiments, all the planned key results were achieved. Students of HAMU and DAMU also became more involved in the project (there was an increase in quotas of doctoral students at the Department of Sound Design, KZT, with which MARC is directly related). The preparation of other projects began, using the results, and the latter’s internal use in teaching or lifelong learning courses significantly increased. Not until 2018 were a total of 3 other projects accepted by the provider (in the NAKI II, MIT - Trio, TAČR - Éta programmes of the Czech Ministry of Culture), which made it possible to pay from DKR in addition to wages. completely abolished in previous years. The project brought a number of scientific research results to the RIV (see the MARC, HAMU Publication Results website) and thus additional financial DKR funds for R&D at AMU.

MSM 511100001 "Research of Sound Perception of Sound of Natural Musical Sources in Relation to their Acoustic Typology"

  • Duration of the Project: 1999-2004
  • Total Level of Subsidy: 21.095 000 CZK

Abstract : The project used the results of the previous project VS 96031 and added to them the vibroacoustic characteristics of musical instruments with the properties of their sounds as perceived by the listeners. It focused on the perception of sound colour, which is a multidimensional, subjective phenomenon that comprehensively reflects the acoustic properties of musical signals produced by musical instruments in the listener's consciousness. The distinguishing acoustic properties of natural sources of musical signals were represented by individual elements of their typological network. The research was based on finding psychoacoustic quantities describing various aspects of sound colour perception,and their relationship to typological features. The descriptions of the colour of sound obtained were used as subjective identifiers of the source, and as the dominant qualitative indicators of its perceived properties. The colour-forming dimensions and verbal descriptions of the colour of sound obtained were published, and are further employed in all subsequent projects.

  • Duration of the Project: 1996-2000
  • Total Level of Subsidy: 11.950 000 CZK

Abstract : The project was focused on the creation of acoustic characteristics that would allow comprehensive documentation of the sound-vibration properties of classical musical instruments. The aim of the project was to research into a unified methodology for the analysis of these characteristics, leading to the design of a typological network of sound identification and classification of sources of musical signals. This typology was applied in practice in the proposal for the publication of an acoustic atlas of musical instruments in the form of a CD-ROM, conceived as an open system of documentation of their general and specific sound properties and data for vibro-acoustic research, connected with perceptual evaluation of sound in follow-up projects.

- PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN IN COOPERATION WITH THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF SOUND, PICTURE AND REPRODUCTION TECHNIQUES (VÚZORT)

(All researchers of VÚZORT moved in 1996, after the dissolution of VÚZORT, to the research department of the Sound Studio HAMU - today the Research Centre of Music Acoustics, MARC, HAMU).

GA CR No. 202/93/2522 "Research Into the Relations Between Sound Colour and Spectrum in Violin Tones"

  • Duration of the Project: 1993–1995

Abstract : The project was undertaken by VUZORT a.s.  in cooperation with HAMU. The collaboration took place during the recording of violin sounds for stimuli used in listening tests  with tones of different quality violins, in a non-reflective room (the violins were provided by HAMU artists). The HAMU sound studio (MARC) provided the  respondents (musicians and music theorists) as well as the space for performing listening tests. The output achieved was qualitative expert knowledge about the frequency transmission characteristics of violins and verbal descriptions of the colour of violin tones (the results were compiled into a publication by the HAMU Publishing House).

A Research Project of the Federal Ministry of Science and Research of the Republic of Austria, "VIAS - a Computersystem zur Beurteilung der Acoustic Eigenschaften von Violinen"

  • Duration of the Project: 1993–1994

A bstract : The project was undertaken by the University of Music in Vienna (IWK) together with VUZORT a.s. in cooperation with HAMU. The cooperation took place during the experimental gauging of the violin using a specialised exciter. The modified excitation system was used in MARC in the project GA CR No. 202/93/2522, the system developed is distributed by IWK under the name BIAS.

In 065, stage B05: "Acoustic Documentation of the Organ and Spaces for Organ Music"

  • Duration of the Project: 1991–1993

Abstract : The project was undertaken by VUZORT a.s. in cooperation with HAMU. The collaboration took place with the participation of a musician at  HAMU, who performed for the  gauging of the organ in churches, at organological consultations and for the audio evaluation of sounds, results which were subsequently used to develop a basic documentation method using 3 microphones. Based on this cooperation, the VS 96031 project was prepared by the HAMU Sound Studio and submitted to the CZECH MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, YOUTH AND SPORT (MŠMT) programme, "Strengthening Research at Universities", which enabled researchers to switch to research at HAMU after the termination of VÚZORT. In MARC, this research was followed by NAKI projects.
